What is Acupuncture and how does it work?

Here at First Markham Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, we offer traditional Chinese acupuncture method in combination with more medical or Western acupuncture techniques to better target more physical ailments in individual patients.

Acupuncture is one of the main forms of treatment in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves inserting very fine needles along 14 Meridians or channels located in very specific points on the body in order to achieve a therapeutic effect. Precise insertion and stimulation of these acupuncture points can produce predictable results in the body, like the release of hormones, which can aid in the pain managements and healing of many different physical and health conditions.

Based in Traditional Chinese Medicine, a philosophy exists that our bodies distribute Qi or Life energy to all of our tissues through channels. When health problems arise, it is considered to be a product of the flow of Qi being impeded, or an imbalance of Yin and Yang. Thus, acupuncture’s main purpose is to remove the blockage and stimulate the body’s natural balance and own ability to heal itself.

Western medical acupuncture involves the insertion of the same fine needles but it is an adaptation of Chinese acupuncture using current knowledge of anatomy, physiology and the principles of evidence based medicine. It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system and is used to treat musculoskeletal pain, including myofascial trigger points.

A combination of both acupuncture techniques is used by our registered acupuncturist at First Markham Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation to better treat all types of ailments.
