Conservative Scoliosis Management

Scoliosis is a condition whereby the spine is curved. Majority (80%) of scoliosis cases occur during puberty although recently more cases are noted in the aging population. The reason for scoliosis to occurs is still largely unknown but factors such as genetics, hormones, nutrition and weight has elements that will affect the person. Just posture is NOT a good explanation for scoliosis as many children have poor posture but does not develop scoliosis. In the past 10-15 years, scoliosis management has undergone lots of research especially in conservative treatments such as exercises and bracing methods. Conventional management of scoliosis in the past just resorted to “sit and wait” method and if the spinal curve progresses and get worse then spinal surgery is an option. Many factors have to be assessed to determine the proper care for scoliosis and should not be dismissed if the curve progresses. There are many health implications from untreated or improperly treated scoliosis that are progressing such as chronic back pain, spinal deformity leading to cosmetic outlook or even respiratory and cardiovascular issues for severe cases. A trained professional in scoliosis management should properly address these issues and try to help before the curve progresses. Many cases can be left alone with no progression but there are those aggressive cases that if not managed properly can lead to life time disabilities.
