Guidelines for Selecting Proper Footwear

When purchasing footwear, it is important to keep these guidelines in mind:

Sizing: There should be room for one finger width space between your longest toe and the top of the shoe while you are standing in the shoe. Bring your orthotics with you when shopping for shoes as they do take up more room, therefore you can ensure there is enough space in the shoe.

Closure system: It is good to choose shoes with a lacing system, as this allows you to adjust the tightness of the shoes, as well as have better control and stability.

Flexion: The shoe should only bend at the toes when you use both hands to bend the shoe upwards. If you are able to bend the entire shoe or curl it up into a ball, that is a good indicator that the shoe lacks the proper support.

Torsional rigidity: The shoe should not twist too much when you use both hands to twist the shoe like you are wringing out a towel. If you are able to twist it a lot, again that is a sign the shoe lacks the proper support.

Heel counter: The back of the shoe where the heel sits should be firm enough to provide you with heel stability. This area should not collapse when you use one hand to push down on the back of the shoe.

Heel height: When purchasing heels, ensure the height of the heel does not exceed 2 inches. The higher the heel is, the more pressure is placed on the ball of the feet.

Deep heel cup: Ensure the shoe has a deep heel cup to provide stability and prevent the heel from slipping.

Insole: If you have orthotics, make sure the shoe has a removable insole that can be replaced with the custom made orthotics.
